What the Beatles taught me

If you ever get blind-sided by life’s problems on some idle Tuesday (Yes! Baz Luhrmann) you can listen to “The Sun Screen Song” or “Here Comes the Sun.”

I find the Beatles to be a big part of my optimism. I have a memory associated with almost every song, a song for every mood, a song I want to play for every one of my friends. So put a record on, and gently place the needle in place- it’s time for a song.

What the Beatles taught me-

of Laughter/Satire

  • Mean Mr. Mustard
  • Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
  • Piggies
  • Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite
  • Lady Madonna

  • With a little Help from my Friends
  • In My life
  • Here Today (Paul MacCartney)

of sheer Brilliance

  • A Day in the Life
  • While My Guitar Gently Weeps
  • Come Together

of the je ne sais quoi behind keeping it simple

  • Black Bird
  • I Want to Hold Your Hand

of Home

  • Two of Us (my mom says she hears this song every time her plane is about to land at JFK)
  • Hello, Goodbye (The first song I learned as a child)
  • Good Night (Every Parent should play this for his/her baby)

of Happiness

  • Here Comes the Sun
  • Good Day Sunshine
  • I’ve Got a Feeling
  • Ob-la-di Ob-la-da

To dream of another world even while your feet are on the ground

  • Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
  • Strawberry Fields Forever
  • Octopus’s Garden
  • I am the Walrus

The Dreadful Ex-other douche bags and bitches of the past

  • The Night Before
  • I’m Looking Through You
  • If You got Trouble
  • No Reply

of Self (and by self, myself)

  • Nowhere Man
  • I’m Only Sleeping
  • Rocky Raccoon

of Rock and Roll

  • Back in the USSR
  • Hey Bulldog
  • I Saw Her Standing There
  • Revolution

of Love and how it is ALL YOU NEED (All You Need is Love)

  • Got to Get You into My Life
  • Love (John Lennon)

of Infatuation

  • Michelle
  • Here, There and Everywhere
  • Something
  • If I fell
  • I’ve just seen a face
  • Honey Pie

  • Across the Universe
  • Magical Mystery Tour
  • Imagine (John Lennon)
  • Because
  • When I’m Sixty-Four

George Martin once said: “Each generation as it grows up, finds the Beatles for themselves-my children found it for themselves, my grandchildren have found it for themselves, and it will go on- it really will”

I can truly say that I have found the Beatles for myself, and I have been touched by their music in so many ways.

Some awesome footage from their LAST performance on the roof of Apple Studio in Savile Row- aka. the Rooftop Concert of 1969.
